Chapter Fourteen

Two weeks.

That’s how long we had to prepare for the war, officially at least. Portin and Darden had made their preparations before the timer started, but Hexpa hadn’t made any obvious moves toward Norn since Lashina had left the city.

Though unprepared in the past, the highly trained scouts of Norn would spot anything in the wild, should any fool try to pull the same trick again.

No. I had other fears when it came to Hexpa.

Portin and Darden had cut themselves off from Gearnix, but the trading hub was still a part of the system. That meant the leader was still a human of flesh and blood, and that they hadn’t done anything to make the world turn against them.

That made any rash responses difficult to pull off.

Norn’s rating had skyrocketed ever since I took over. Of course, I couldn’t take all the credit, but the truth was that the city had been on the verge of collapse not so long ago.

But what was the point of earning a rating if you couldn’t spend it?

Attacking another city before the official warning period had completed would break our hard-earned reputation, but I couldn’t find it within myself to care about that. Leslie had made a literal deal with the devil and letting her run around causing havoc would only increase the problem exponentially.

We had to deal with the problem at its source.

“What is your plan, Baron Lord?” Corvo’s tone turned professional as our discussion moved on to the strategy itself.

“First things first, we need to confirm our objectives.” I turned and passed a note to Duke who, after reading through its contents, nodded and left the room. “In my opinion, the primary thrust of our assault should be aimed at the train hub.”

“The hub?” Leon spoke up as he heard the bizarre target. “Why would we strike there? From what you told us, the Hexpa council sealed all outbound traffic shortly after the takeover.”

“Yes. But how many citizens would want to leave after the true nature of their new leadership revealed itself.” I sighed as I recalled the seer who had visited Langshire not so long ago. “Those things don’t care about human lives. We don’t know much from our informant, but it’s clear they don’t have good plans for those who live within their new kingdoms.”

“So, you want to give them a way out? Open up the train routes, bring out as many as we can?” Corvo’s expression brightened a little as he caught on to the main thrust of my thoughts. “They won’t expect it, sure, but it won’t take long for all of Hexpa’s defenders to surround us in the streets.”

“That’s where the second part of the assault comes into play.” I reached into the large drawer under my desk and pulled out an oversized map of Hexpa. Though potentially inaccurate in some ways, the main parts of the city wouldn’t have changed much since it was drawn. “I will lead an incursion into the council chambers. We’ll make as much noise as we can, shake the tree, see what falls out.
